Location
Description of the location
Costa Blanca is the Mediterranean coast of the province of Alicante, located in the southeast of Spain. The picturesque coastline with numerous beaches - bays and mesmerizing mountain views stretches for 250 km.
The Costa Blanca region has a state-of-the-art healthcare infrastructure that is globally recognized for its extensive experience in serving international patients and cutting-edge treatment.
The most emblematic and visited cities on the Costa Blanca are Benidorm, Calpe, Denia and Moraira.
The resort town of Calpe is located in the northern part of the Costa Blanca. The population is about 30 thousand inhabitants, however, during the holiday season, this figure increases significantly, by about 5-6 times. The area of Calpe is 23.5 m2, the borders of the city itself are outlined by the surrounding mountainous relief.
The history of this small town began with the fishing village of the bay "Badia de Calp" - and to this day, fishing boats deliver fresh catch to the fish exchange at the Ifach cliff every day.
The Ifach Rock, which is often compared to the Rock of Gibraltar, was recognized as a natural heritage in 1987, and today it has become a real paradise for many birds and representatives of flora and fauna that live here, which can be observed in a wide variety. By the way, it is possible to make a full-fledged ascent to the mountain for those who like to engage in active sports and just lead a healthy lifestyle. This little trip will give you an unforgettable experience. On the way to the top, winding paths, stone roads and even a large tunnel await you, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes. At the end of the journey, a real reward is prepared for you: breathtaking views of the sea and the nearby lake.
Another wonderful place to visit is the “Las Salinas” Salt Lake in the Middle Ages, which fed Calpe through salt extraction, and now attracts tourists with the opportunity to see pink flamingos, storks, Royal Herons and ducks. On the salt plains of Calpe, rare plants grow, characteristic only of salty soils.
The old town of Calpe is the pearl of Calpe, the historical center and a small quarter located in the very center of Calpe, close to the bus station, the main tourist routes and the beaches. The old town in Calpe is small in size and can be easily explored on foot, so it is more the old quarter or the old part of Calpe than the old town. This place is perhaps the most visited in the city. In the old quarter, you can fully experience the Spanish style and immerse yourself in the past. Narrow streets are intertwined with low, traditional Spanish houses, many of which are painted in bright colors.
On the territory of the old city, the remains of the fortress wall (defensive fortifications of the city) from the times of the Moorish rule have been preserved. And the unique cathedral "La Iglesia Antigua", made in the Moorish Gothic style. That is why the Old Town of Calpe is also called the "Moorish Quarter".
The defensive tower of “Torreón de la Peca”, next to which two of the four surviving cannons can be seen.
The parish church “Parroquia Virgen De Las Nieves”, located on the Plaza de la Villa, where services, weddings and other ceremonies take place, is another significant place.
For the holidays, residents of the city prepare in advance and very carefully. The most popular are:
- Beer Festival and Moors Festival.
- Andalusian Fair.
- German Carnival and the holiday of the Virgin of Carmen (patroness of sailors, since the sea plays a big role in the lives of local residents, thanks to the actively developing fishing industry, which brings most of the income).
Calpe is a city that has attracted attention for the acquisition of real estate from residents of countries such as England, Sweden, Germany and Scandinavia for several years. There is a wonderful climate here, which, for example, is not available in these countries during winter periods. In summer, the temperature reaches (+30) ° C, the water warms up to (+ 25-26) ° C (July-August), due to the proximity of the sea, there is no strong stuffiness, but in September-October the weather becomes much more pleasant - (+25 -27) ° C, the water is still warm - (+25) ° C and you can still continue to swim.
One of the most popular forms of purchasing food in Calpe is the markets. A large market usually takes place once a week on Saturdays, from about 8 am to 2 pm, there are also small markets that work 2 times a week (Wednesday and Saturday), sometimes also on Tuesdays in summer.
Why are markets so popular?
The answer to this question is very easy. Since you can buy better quality inexpensive food in the market than what is offered in supermarkets, you can buy many things that simply do not exist in regular stores.
As for the local cuisine, in Calpe it has its own characteristics.
The main ingredient of local restaurants is fresh fish, but it should be borne in mind that not all fish on the menu are local, there are also frozen Chinese products, but in order to reveal the difference, it is worth visiting the fish exchange in the port and trying real local fish for a start. You should definitely visit one of the most famous local fish restaurants, also with a large selection of seafood dishes - Andalucia (Ctra. Puerto).
Calpe is one of the best places to taste authentic paella. Wash down with local white wines and sangria.
