Location
Description of the location
Orihuela is known for its historic center, declared Historic-Artistic and Monumental Complex, as well as the birthplace of the poet and playwright Miguel Hernandez. Also in Orihuela there is the University named after Miguel Hernandez, who was born and lived most of his life in Orihuela. The abundance of students and young people leaves an imprint on the image of the city, they are proud of the victories of the local football club, rugby is in favor, and bowling is open in one of the nightclubs.
The centuries-old history of Spain is fully reflected in the architecture of ancient Orihuela, located at the foot of the hill, whose top is crowned with the ruins of an ancient Arab fortress. And even higher, on the rocky mountain range "Sierra de Orihuela", a giant Catholic cross made of metal sparkling in the sun is visible from a distance. Almost the entire ancient center of Orihuela, as well as its already ruined castle and fortress walls, are a historical reserve, declared in 1969.
Among the magnificent heritage of the past stands out the Cathedral, built in the XIV-XVI centuries. in the style of a gothic temple. Its marble altar of rare beauty, inlaid with silver, and the rich iconostasis have survived to this day in excellent condition.
Walking along the streets and squares will allow you to see the other side of the majestic city - it is cozy and not boring. Light fountains, musical pavilions in the park, an unusually shaped lantern in the garden on New Square, an old and strange tower of a round clock - unexpected and original details of the city's appearance will not leave anyone indifferent.
In addition to the lands included in the municipal boundaries of the city, Orihuela also has its own territorial beaches on the White Coast - Orihuela Costa, which are located just 30 minutes from the city center. In fact, Orihuela Costa alone has 11 beaches. These include such famous coastal recreation areas as: "Playa Flamenca", "La Zenia", "Campoamor". The quality of the resort service here is rated as one of the highest on the Costa Blanca, and the natural beauty of the sea and beaches delights vacationers.
If we talk about the holidays, the Holy Week held in Orihuela is considered one of the most spectacular events that can be seen in Spain. For several days, at nightfall, columns of mystical figures in robes pass through the streets of the city and sculptures of saints decorated with fresh flowers are carried on a stretcher. The exceptional spectacle of the “pasacalle” is also due to the fact that several Masonic lodges are registered in Orihuela, each of which passes through the streets with lit torches, in costumes and attributes of its order.
Another signature highlight of Orihuela is the Feria, a costumed medieval fair held here annually, where you can see Maghreb magicians walking in a crowd of spectators in turbans and with boas hanging from their shoulders, and minstrels playing ancient instruments, and blacksmiths, in the presence of onlookers fanning fur horns. Vendors are also dressed to match these characters, offering tourists spicy herbs and incense, homemade glass-hard parmesan cheese or fragrant rustic flatbreads, and, of course, dozens of types of jamon and olives.
That is why quite a lot of residents of Scandinavia, Norway, Canada come to this city and prefer to buy real estate here. The climate in Orihuela is very convenient and comfortable for living, this place combines, on the one hand, the silence of a provincial town, where you can relax, spend time on clean beaches with good service. On the other hand, if you're looking for some rhythm and fun, Orihuela can provide that for you too. This is a universal city where everyone can choose what he likes. This is a great place to stay with the whole family.
