Location
Description of the location
Águilas is a city in Spain, part of the Autonomous Community of Murcia. The population is 34,772 people. Águilas means "eagle" in translation, and one can imagine that the majestic birds are quite comfortable here. A small village surrounded by rocks, at the highest point of which stood an ancient fortress.
Due to the location between the coast and the mountains, the climate here is always mild and the warm southern sun almost always shines, the rays of which can be enjoyed on the beach. One of the main reasons why residents of countries like Norway, Scandinavia, Sweden and Russia prefer to buy real estate here: the beaches and the sea! 28 km of coastline and 35 beaches, impressive, right?
Here, wide sandy beaches stretch the entire length of the coast. The beaches on the Levante side are a bit smaller, but are well protected from the westerly winds on the Poniente side. Here, in 2011, a new concert hall "Infanta Doña Elena Auditorium and Conference Center" was built, which can be recognized from afar.
North of Águilas is the "Cabo Cope-Calnegre Regional Park", where the Mediterranean has magnificent flora. In addition, the cliffs of "Cabo Cope" are visible from afar and are a favorite resting place for seabirds.
But even in the very center of the city, you can rest well on the endless sandy beaches. There is a Palm Island with sand and sun loungers, where you can spend a wonderful day of relaxation. The Paseo Pareo de la Constitución has excellent bars and cafes for coffee and sandwiches at any time.
Not far from Águilas there is a small island, Isla del Fraile, of only 6.3 hectares. Its steep cliffs are a nature reserve and home to many birds, providing nesting areas for them and also home to many marine animals. With a bit of luck, you have every chance of spotting the dolphins at sunrise if you get to the very edge of the cape.
In addition, Aguilas has a fairly rich history of the city, which has left its mark on the architectural structures. The castle of Castillo San Juan de las Águilas rises above the cliff of the Peñón del Roncador with views of the Andalusian Mediterranean coast and the mountainous interior of Murcia, and a beautiful town in the mountains. This defensive fortress dates back to the 18th century and has a long and rich history. Initially, simple towers were built in the 15th and 16th centuries along the coast to counter the pirates.
On the main road leading to the harbor is the old town house, once a casino, which today houses a quaint 1920s-style bar on the ground floor and a cultural space on the top floor. This house was built in 1894-1895 and surprises not only with its architecture, executed in the best traditions of the "Art Nouveau" style, but also with its fantastic paintings on walls and ceilings.
The most beautiful place is, perhaps, the central square (Plaza de España), where the eight main streets of the city are located. Some of them are popular shopping streets so something always happens here, after shopping you can sit back, relax and have a cup of coffee in one of the cozy local cafes. Around the square you can find many historical buildings dating back to the heyday of Águilas, when the British used it as an iron ore processing center.
As for the cultural life of the city, the carnival week at the end of January in Águilas is the most important event of the year for a small coastal town. Right now, something unheard of is happening on the streets. Practically all the inhabitants and thousands of tourists from all over the world celebrate the fifth season. They sew costumes, beautiful masks, everyone gets together and walks all night, they organize parades and concerts in the squares. This Águilas carnival has been celebrated for more than 200 years. The procession can be compared to the carnival of Tenerife and that of Andalusian Cádiz. It is considered one of the most important carnivals in Spain.
Delicious Mediterranean cuisine here. For those who want to be by the sea, there are many restaurants on Paseo de la Constitución very close to the beach. "Dolce Viet" is considered one of the best restaurants on the seafront. Outwardly, it is more of a cafe-bar, but the food there is very tasty and there is a terrace in the shady area, which is certainly not a minor factor in summer.
Another very good place is "La Piramide", where excellent cuisine at affordable prices and enough space for the whole family.
In the city center, just a 5-minute walk from the beach, there are some interesting tapas bars, such as the picturesque "El Pimiento" with its Spanish charm, which the locals love to visit.
And if you want something romantic and noble, then you can visit the place "El Pie" at the foot of the Castle. But almost only foreigners go there, Spaniards rarely go there.
